Meet Rachel, owner of Stems NH and Lead Designer
My educational background began with a degree in Fashion merchandising from F.I.T. In NYC. It has always been my desire to own my own business. At that time I had no idea what life had in store for me. After graduating and a few moves along the way I ended up living in Branford, CT, and not working in the fashion industry at all but teaching at a CrossFit gym. This is where my life changed in what felt like an instant. I went from running, lifting, and competing, to being sick. I had rashes, fevers, night sweats, muscle weakness, and pain. This illness went from bad to worse for 7 years. During those years I went to every doctor. I had several trips to the ER and accumulated a lot of debt just trying to get a diagnosis to get better. Traditional medicine wasn’t working and no one seemed to have an accurate diagnosis, though one ER doctor said to continue to fight for one, and believed it was likely undiagnosed Lyme. That took me on the journey through the holistic side of medicine to find a way to get my life back! During this time I was living in Austin, TX., and on the days that I felt well enough to go out for a little while I would visit a small local flower shop and make myself a flower wrap. This was the one thing that I could do to lift my spirits. I would make that trip once a week to add some color to my apartment and it provided something to look forward to. This is where my love for flowers emerged.
My fashion design background became influential once again by applying what I learned in color theory and spatial design and applying that to floral design. I started experimenting with my designs and it ignited a joy I hadn’t felt in a long time. Fast forward to my moving back to NH to surround myself with my family to help support me as I continued with my journey to recover from illness. It is in NH that I was finally diagnosed with untreated late Lyme disease and began a heavy antibiotic regimen along with 02 therapy, and many other modalities to fight the lingering painful symptoms. It was over many years and thousands of dollars that I finally found a regimen that helped me get out of my isolated, dark, and painful life to start the journey to recovery. It has been a long road and in that, I have found flowers helped save me from some dark days of despair.
During the time being back in NH, I began following another successful florist in NH and joined her newly formed group named, The Botanical Business Society. All the women came with varying backgrounds in flowers and each had a desire to build and grow their skills and knowledge in the flower industry. My mother and I attended monthly meetings which included the business side along with hands-on flower arranging skills. At the end of that year, we got together to collaborate in designing a large-scale floral installation. This is where my love of event work came to be. Transforming a blank space into a floral vision. Having this mentor in the industry has been invaluable in learning what it takes to become a florist and small business owner.
